Spotlight Refinery29’s values of equality and inclusivity through an artistic installation at 29Rooms.
Stained glass is commonly associated with traditional spaces of worship, depicting deities and key moments from scriptures. Taking a page from this familiar practice, I wanted to reclaim this medium to create a symbolic sanctuary that elevated the divine that exists within all of us. In this space, our audience would be inspired to celebrate universal love, acceptance, and compassion regardless of another's race, gender, and sexuality.
We partnered with artist José A. Roda, known for abstracting the human form to illustrate characters with no identifiable gender or race, to create a series of panels inspired by traditional stained glass art. José depicted scenes in which figures embraced and existed in harmony, reflecting fluid expressions of love and identity.
The panels were made of colored plexiglass and arranged in fragmented patterns to create an abstracted temple-like space. Curated lighting design leveraged the colors of the panels to cast colored hues, similar to the effect of light upon stained glass. This touch further illustrated how practicing equality and inclusivity has the power to illuminate our world as a brighter, more colorful place.
